XJ rebuild

Once the inside was all tacked into place I focused back on the outside loop aligning the mounting plates and where I would be drilling the holes. This will attach the outside parts of the cage with the inside.

Once the top loop was where I wanted it and holes were drilled and hardware used to secure the parts together I then started to work on the A pillar. This was tricky as I also had the bar going across the bottom of the windshield. This took a lot of time making sure that the bars would align with the top but also that they were close to the body of the Jeep so that they would not get hung up on the trail by a tree or rock. I will say that I did like the kit as they designed the bottom bar to be 2" longer than needed giving you material to work with on fitting it in place. The same is true for the A pillar.

Once everything was tacked into place I cycled through the windshield wipers and also made sure that my hood would open all the way.

I am finally at the point were I can start welding all of the joints. But before I start to do that there was one last thing I had to do. Way back in the day I had 4 7" round lights on my roof. I had removed them back in 2013 cause my Jeep would not fit in my garage. When I removed them I left the wiring in place thinking I would put them back one day. It turned out the other day I saw a sale on Amazon that was too good to pass up where I ended up getting these 4 7" lights for $32. And because the wiring was already done, I made some square tabs and tacked them in place and I once again have roof lights for my Jeep.

Also as I have been going through my Jeep I have notice some patching that’s been needing to happen for a long time, so I have also started to cut out all of the rusted parts in my flooring and replacing it.

So this is where I am at as of today. My next plan is to start welding up the parts of the cage. It is designed to all be removed from the Jeep so that I can reach every angle of the cage. So far I have the C pillar part out and will start with that on welding it complete. Once that is done I will move on to the B pillar and then the roof. I feel the roof will be tricky as I try to lift it up and drive my Jeep out from under it.

Fawking A! This is awesome. Can’t wait to see this on the trail. You got a target? June camping-and-wheel?

Excellent!

I’m hoping to have it ready by the end of May, but will definitely have it ready by the camp and wheel.

I remember when I could speak that confidently . . .

So this past month I’ve been able to get most of what I needed done. I was able to get everything welded up and painted.

I had some plastic I was able to hang up as kind of a redneck paint booth to keep the spray paint somewhat contained, and not get over spry everywhere.

The interior parts I ended up painting grey to try and match the existing trim.

The external part of the cage I was able to find a close match to the Jeep color as I want the cage to kind of blend in with the body.

Next on the list is to get the top of the cage back on the Jeep. This will require a few hands so maybe a tech day is needed in the next couple of days or weeks depending on my schedule. Once that is all in place I will finish welding all of the tie in points of the cage to the body of the Jeep. With that complete I can start my list of getting my front fenders back on, installing the new lights, patching up some rust spots on the floor in the front of the Jeep, do some maintenance on my front axel and then should be ready to go.

NICE CAGE !

Can definitely stop by to lend some muscle
