April 26th 8:30 with 9:00AM rollout
meet at the Park and Ride off of Exit 6a on 95 Hopkins Hill Rd.
For anyone who doesn’t know - Big River is a large parcel of land managed by the Water Resources Board and DEM in the middle of RI adjacent to 95 in Coventry and West Greenwich. There is no mechanical access - but the mountain bikers have worked very hard to gain access. for the last 6 years OSJ has participated in the clean up by helping to get the larger items like whole cars and trucks as well as mountains of old tires. there is always more stuff out there and we have a couple tasks we were asked to accomplish this year.
There are some downed powerlines that have been stripped of there copper. We will have to go in and cut up the casings and haul them to the dumpsters. The casings are along 2 access roads, one being New London Trnpk and the other at the end of Burnt Sawmill Rd.
There is a boat on the side of the road off New London Trnpk and a bunch of tractor trailer tires in the woods. We will need to pull the boat out and possibly cut it up to fit into a dumpster. the tractor trailer tires will probably need to be winched out.
There is an old Pinto in the woods off New London Trnpk. if we can get to it without having to cut down a bunch of trees we will drag that out.
So we will need 3 teams and maybe 4 depending on how much of a pain cutting the casings will be. Lastly the main location the others (non-OSJ) will be focusing efforts is a residence. They have a bunch of stuff out there and the Mnt. Bikers are going to check if there is metal to scrap. the funds from scraping any metal will go back to the West Greenwich Conservation Commission to help fund next years Clean Up.
If anybody wants to lead a group please speak up. You will be responsible for organizing the needed tools and man power and guiding your group from the park and ride to your project site.
The clean-up runs from early morning till lunch time. A hot lunch is provided. After lunch, the NEMBA guys go out Mountain Biking. If anyone is into the Mountain Biking thing, there will be lots of people biking.

We will need generators (plural) and Sawzalls (plural). I’ve already walked the trail and determined that the pinto is accessible without cutting down trees but it is narrow in a couple spots. It will NOT be possible to drag the pinto out whole. It needs to be cut into pieces. The boat also must be cut into pieces. This is why we need a minimum of two generators and multiple sawzalls. My generator is only 2kw and can only power one sawzall.
We will also need cutters for the power line casings.
The boat. Probably need 2-4 people with sawzall (or maybe chainsaw?) to chop it into slabs then a trailer to carry the pieces to the dumpsters (which will be less than 1/2 mile away).
Tires. These are a couple hundred feet away from the boat. There are more than shown in the picture. Perhaps 15-20 total (and god knows how many if you start digging). They are right of the side of paved road but 15-20 feet down into a ditch and will probably need to be winched up.
The electric wire insulation. There could be a mile or more of this stuff. Needs to be cut into small enough pieces to haul out. There are two locations for the wire so we probably need two crews.
Junk car. Its maybe 1000 feet down a fairly narrow trail. The narrowest spot is a hair over 5.5 feet. Really tight squeeze except for may stock width with stock tires. Needs to be cut up and hauled out. Perhaps ATV with trailer instead?
I will be there again with Charles and the 4runner.
I can bring a 7500 generator and a saws-all , chainsaw and bolt cutters.
Eric, let me know what else you need I have a little of everything.
and I’ll post it over @ Nexterra

A free lunch consisting of wraps, sandwiches, salad, coleslaw, and soft drinks will be served at the nearby Mishnock Fire Barn starting at noon. Perhaps more importantly, there will be a CASH BAR!
