Which ford 8.8 to get

I been googling the crap out of what to get a Ford 8.8 out of. Between people on pirate 4x4 being DBs and jeep forum giving out all different answers I notnsure which one to grab for my CJ. Any info would be great

But the answer is 96-98 Explorer with open diff.

But which ones have the 31 spline?

96-98 Explorer 8.8’s are 31 spline. 29 spline was used in Ranger 8.8’s and earlier Explorer rear axles. Explorer 8.8’s newer than 98 until they went IRS would also be 31 spline should be fine.

I have to say I’m loving my 8.8.

Keep in mind:

8.8 is a solid axle, but runs a 5x4.5 pattern. CJ’s run 5x5.5

You can get conversion spacers, which are not a great idea if you are going thru the trouble of an axle swap, IMHO

You could have the stock shafts redrilled to 5.5 (easy for a machine shop to do)

You could get aftermarket axles, many of which come with 4.5 and 5.5 holes already drilled.

Oh, and get an 8.8 with disc brakes.
