Need some, I’m breaking drive shaft u joints in different locations. Front and rear shafts. It only started when I doubled my horsepower with my new motor. Is it because of too much horsepower or need to final change my gears? Still running factory 2:72 . Thanks for your time.
What tire size are you running? With 2.72’s, it puts quite a bit of torque on the driveline to get those turning, and the bigger the tire, the more torque would be required to turn them.

I think you have a skinny pedal problem not a u-joint problem. ![]()
35" tires, and didn’t have a problem until I changed the motor.I was just pulling it out of my sandals it just has to climb a 6" foundation wall to get out and I blew front joint apart. I just need to know what direction to soak my money into.
Pulling out of my shed.
I think Mike is right…
If you wanted to break a bike chain, put a body builder on the pedals and climb a wall in high gear…
I think gears (axle or even x-fer depending on use) would be the place to act based on what you are saying. You should skid tires before you bust driveline components in a slow crawl up a curb.
35’s, 4.10? sounds like you have plenty of motor…
Thanks for all the info, I’ll get with Ricky beginning of next year when I can borrow 401K again. Unless Santa is good to me
Presumably they are 1310’s? There are plenty of guys running buggies with doublers and 40" rubber that have no issues running 1310’s. The doublers in particular multiply the torque by 5x-10x which is way more than the “resistance” the higher diff gearing will generate. I’d also check closely for potential binding in the yokes or the u-joint trunion.
ALSO, are you using Spicer u-joints. They are up to 2x stronger than other brands.
I was using Moog because they were free , I guess time to upgrade. Also looked at front shaft I tore the drive shaft metal apart didn’t break u joint . Rear I snapped u joint piece off not just the caps.
Make sure your driveline angles are still ok with the new motor. Did it move the tcase forwards or back? Are the motor mounts and tcase/tranny mount ok?
