Re Gear

Alright guys need some advice,

I’m looking to re gear my 92 wrangler (3.07 to 4.55) to run 33’s for now. I’m looking for 60/40 or 70/30 split between off-road/on-road I’m going to basically rebuild the front Dana 30 (axles, seals, bearings, carrier, larger u-joints etc.) and install an automatic locker. I plan to keep this axle under the jeep as the hp Dana 30 is pretty good for what I do and after the rebuilt should be pretty stout. I thinking auto locker as I have a front axle disconnect which would basically eliminate the nasty habits of an auto in the front.

On the back I’m looking to do as little as possible to get the matching gear set in there. Once the Dana 35 goes I’ll upgrade to something better. This is pretty far outside my skill set. Any body know of any shop in the warwick/providence area that area that good at this type of work.

Thanks,

Jeff

talk to ricky.

Regearing is the time to swap rear axles.

What Eric said, go grab & 8.8 out of a explorer & regear that, dont waste you money on the 35.

unfortunately I don’t have the cash to do the rear the way I want right now (axles, gears, locker) and who know it might last a long time. I just want to do as little as possible on the rear right now.

You should be able to find an 8.8 for $125/150. Plus a few bucks for new perches. Save the extra dough needed and do it once. You can always lock it later on

If you go 4:10 you can find 8.8’s with that. And then get a 4:10 front gear set from Jeeps unlimited

What they said. A junkyard 8.8 with 4.10’s will cost about the same, if not less, than a re gear of that POS d35.

Either go that route or keep what you have. Do NOT put any money into the D35. Not even for gear oil!

Funny you say that I think the only lubrication in my d35 is water with a little oil. Alright then this brings up the other part if the equation. 4.10 or 4.55 ??? I will have a trailer and want to be 70/30. I just got a good deal on 5 33s. But with 3.07s I don’t even want to put them on. Are 4.10s easier to find/cheaper. I’m thinking 4.55 … If your gonna do it once !!!

Then who. i don’t have the skill or tools for for this. Are there any shops you guys trust. Any club members do side work. I’m willing to help/pay for somebody time.

I want to build the front with gears auto locker new axles. It will need a new carrier. Can I use the larger u joints with stock nuckle and steering???

I’m running 4:10 with 35’s and it’s my daily driver. If you want bigger brakes and steering go with a WJ setup. Take it from me if your gonna lock it go chromoly. I do side work if you are really looking.

And get rid of the 2 piece axle(disconnect front) you will break that in no time with a locker

I’m really looking!!! A locker and 33’s is the goal so I can get out in more of the fun stuff. I finally have the rims and tires. like everybody Im on a budget. But I want to build up the front d30 with gears, axle shafts & locker. I’m thinking auto locker but if I remove the disconnect I’m thinking selectable. I want to do as little as possible to the rear cause I want to focus on the front for now. But if budget allow I like to swap it out. Any idea what I would be looking at to build the front right. I assume 4.10 would be a cheaper option right. ??? That might help make the decision for the rear easier.

4.56 or 4.88 is ideal. I’m running 4.56’s with 33’s and would be happy to have 4.88’s.

The attraction of 4.10’s is some axles come from the factory with them so you can gain back a little torque without the expense of a re-gear.

if your regearing go 4.56 at the least. 8.8 from the junkyard or second hand from someone should be no more than 200 plus the cost of brakes and new bearings 100, oil the total might run you around 350, gears would be another 250, master install kit 150, then perches for 50 and regearing… 300ish. new stock axle shafts for the D30 should be no more than 50-75 plus 70 for new ujoints, locker 300, gears 250ish, master install kit is another 150. its a slippery slope so do it once and do it right. a built D35 will not sell for the cost of scrap so dont bother. take your time and do it right. the guys here can help you save some money with the install and prep but get everything you need first.
