here’s a quick picture of the parts that I snapped this morning. If you want it, you will need new spider gears. Stock ones are all chewed up.

Advice taken, new carrier and bearings on order.

I was thinking the same thing as Eric as I was reading this.

Oh it has 3.73 gears.
How did you make out on this, Smutz?
Any updates?
Well… Up until last night I would have said ‘great’. The install itself was time consuming but went pretty well once a few part issues were straightened out. Turns out it’s much harder than it should be to get a replacement carrier for the jk Dana 44. The jk carrier is slightly different from a standard 44 .100" to be exact.
So there were some delays in the parts but I can deal with that. Ricky was great in walking me through doing to teardown and install. A lot of checking and minor tweaks and back around again. Biggest thing I can say about doing gears for the first time is ‘take your time’ and be patient. All said and done it took about 12ish hours over three days to get the new gears in the housings.
Reinstalling the axles went pretty easy. Had it rolling again in about 6 hours. Everything running well for he first drive. Housing weren’t too hot. Drove it for the last week plus with no issues. Aussie in the rear isn’t too challenging to drive with. Just need to be paying attention on corners. The 488 ratio might be a little higher than I would really like but it’s really minor.
And then Thursday happened. Driving home from work the clangs started. Started to hear it while coasting. Pulled over over to see if it was a loose driveshaft or something obvious. Nothing visibly wrong so I tried to limp it the few miles home. But it got worse and worse. When the drivetrain is under load, either from accelerating or engine braking, it mostly goes away. But if it’s in neutral or in gear and coasting it’s thuds/whacks at a rate relative to speed. So it’s definitely something in the driveline. It sounds like it’s coming from center of the jeep (tranny or tcase) but I could just be hearing it wrongly and could be coming from the rear diff. Had to pull over and have it towed the last four miles home and in the driveway it has sat.
Going to get it on jacks tomorrow and see if I can’t narrow down where it’s coming from. Need to get this thing fixed for GTD.

Good luck Brandon sounds like a possible pinion problem(just guessing by description)on off throttle is what I’m going by.
Got it up on jacks and pulled the rear diff cover. No damage to the ring gear and pinion of locker. Unfortunately it sounds like it’s coming from the transfer case. Anyone knowledgeable in drivetrain issues around this week to help me troubleshoot?
Try to pull the rear driveshaft and give it a drive.
