new gears question

Rough Country websites sells motive gears. So that means you could go see chris at jeepin stuff to get them and save your self some money with the shipping

For a daily driver you should consider Spicer gears.

Typical Jeep; Five people, Five opinions

Spicers are without question the top of the line. Guaranteed less noise than any other brand. But you pay for it.

I have ran motive and yukon, no difference in noise, haven’t broke any gears yet either.

Re gear for your final tire size, you do not want to have to do this more than once.

Alright so the regear has begun. I ended up with 4.86 Yukon’s, BTW Northridge 4x4 offers sets of gears with install kits for $500. I spent a few hours today pulling the rear axle and tearing it down.

Upon inspection I discovered this:

Chewed up spider gears. Couple of questions:

is this common? at 55000 miles?

replacement recommendations?

Replace spider gears with aussie locker. Being the rear won’t notice it in DD. In snowy roads use little less throttle

Not something I would think to see that soon. I have an inch pound torque wrench if you need it.

I second the Aussie

The cost difference to add the Aussie is really enticing at $325 with the spider gears ranging in price from $125-$275 (g2 and Yukon respectively). I know Matt had real problem with his mech locker in the snow in his JK. That kind of worries me if we have another winter like this one. Curious how the locker will interact with traction control that is active in 4H. I guess it would never kick in in the rear if it never sees a differential of wheel speed.

Hoping to have the other axle out and torn down this week in prep for a tech day either this weekend or next. Ricky are you available to help out and do you have a preference of weekend?

Don’t let my stupid driving make up your mind lol. Also in my JK i had a lock right, in my older TJ I had an aussie, and loved it.

Managed to get the front axle out after the snow on Saturday. Finishing the tear down this week. Who’s up for a Tech Day this weekend regear and Locker install? preference on day?

I never had a problem with my assuie in the snow

Also I’m busy Saturday, I could maybe help Sunday. Can you transport the axles?

I am open all weekend but I can’t transport unless I can borrow a vehicle. Driving a sedan currently.

Well my luck just continues. made the decision to go with the Aussie, came in today. Started to tear down the carrier only to discover that the original owner purchased the Trac lock LSD option from the factory. The locker is not compatible with the carrier and now have to either pick up a standard carrier or sell/return the locker and order replacement spiders. So much for getting the new ring and pinions installed this weekend.

Also, if i do go the new carrier route, can I reuse the carrier bearings (in good condition) or will they need to be replaced? Just not sure how well they usually survive being pulled off.

I would look at getting new ones. If your already waiting, .right as well make everything new. You can always use the old ones as setup bearings.

can crown get you what you need on the quick? Just simply and get a spool.

Do you have pics of the LSD? What’s your current gear ratio? What do you want for it if I can get you a stock carrier. Maybe a swap out of my wife’s 2008?

What axle doe that Aussie fit? I was looking into a locker for my Dana 30.

If you are re gearing then go full carrier locker. Yes, its more up front expense but when you are already in this deep might as well go all the way.
