Hi all.
I was at the 14th Annual Jeep Rally in CT last weekend with my 70 Jeepster. In pouring over the pictures in various albums from the event from other attendees I came across only one other Jeepster among the 1200+ Jeeps. Just wondering if that person is on here or if anyone knows themā¦
Above is my 70 Jeepster. Kris and I drove it 80+ miles each way to the Rally. Had a few issues on the ride, but a couple of hand tools and a little electrical tape got me home.
On Friday I had replaced the alternator for at least the 3rd time since owning the Jeepster⦠This time I went to an alternator from Chelmsford Electrical an alternator specialist, rather than swapping it again at the box store āfor freeā. I had a neighbor work on the Jeepster with me to change it out to single wire GM
In the process he traced the wires out from the battery to under the dash and moved the blinker resistor (not sure exactly what its called) which ended up near the choke cable. Eventually the cable and blinker unit made contact, sparks flew a few times before I figured it out.
The first time there was smoke it coincided with a belt squealing. I thought that the smoke was from the belt, pulled over saw no issues with the belt and got driving again. The second time, minutes later the arc from contact cut right thru the choke cable severing it into two pieces and scaring the poo out of my wife and I. We quickly got that under control by killing the ignition and taped things off so there were no live wires exposed. We made it the rest of the way to the rally with no incident. In the process of moving the cable away from the live wires and taping things off, I bent the end of the cable so it was no longer close to the wires. Just a teaspoon too much caution  but Ill get to thatā¦
We got to the Rally and set up our booth in record time as it was now 8:47 when we had planned to arrive around 8:15. The day was amazing and we had a ton of people admiring the Jeepster and vising the booth all day. Everything fit into the Jeep there and on the ride back. try that in a TJ!
When it was time to leave the Jeepster wouldnāt start. Eventually I manually closed the choke and then after it started I gave it some gas which should free up the choke cable and open it back up. It started and ran fine⦠for a short while. When I got moving and gave it gas it started to die. Bending the end of the cable caused the choke cable to stick. With the choke stuck closed it was starving the engine of air, then trying to start it again it got flooded. Two of my friends from my BSJ, Doug and Amanda saw me on the side of the road and bless them, they stopped to help. We found a cracked ground wire near the ignition switch. Got that connected better and we were off again. Amanda followed me most of the rest of the way home on the highway for about 60 miles. The Jeep did awesome on the highway aside from the occasional lullaby wobble. This was most likely due to the old shocks and lack of sway bar. The Jeepster would occasionally rock back and forth slightly like a boat on the ocean. Iāve been holding off on new shocks until I put the lift in to it⦠Donāt want to pay for the same parts twice. All in all it was a good 4.5 hrs of driving the low back 46 year old iron down from MA to CT and back. I could have towed it, I could have taken my JKU instead and it would have been a drama free ride there and back. Instead I had an adventure and was truly lucky not to loose the Jeepster in an electrical fire.
I highly recommend you toss a fire extinguisher in all of your rides. I know of at least one FSJ that burned due to electrical issues and I know it happens to cars all the time. I tried to get an extinguisher at the event, but all the vendors had was the holder for the extinguisher and not the actual fire extinguisher. Going to grab one today and mount it on my B-pillar.
thanks for reading and stay safe out there!
And as we all know, Jeep Peeps are the BEST Peeps!
