If it’s anything like the d30, it’s not all that difficult outside of having to tear down the whole font end. If your d44 has been apart recently and you used never seize, things should come apart easy. There are some good YouTube videos out there that will provide helpful tips. You will need 4’ of 3/4" steel pipe to remove and seat the seals. Seals shouldn’t be more than $15 each plus your new diff fluid. Total time is prob about 3-4 hours
The only thing I would add is that it is much easier if you have a second person when you seat the seals, one person to tap them in, the other person to keep things lined up in the housing.
Forget about all the fancy seal presses, and jigs that people make online. The easiest way is the way Jay mentioned, the appropriate size socket, and a long steel pipe
Wrap your axles with electric tape. Did it to my buddy’s jeep not a drop sense then. Make sure you rap the tape in the direction of rotation to avoid it unwrapping as you drive down the road.
I’m not sure which D44 we are talking about above but on my rear D44 the seals are behind the bearing and retainer ring which are pressed on. A tall press is needed.
If its “flanged” style axle then the bearing and retaining ring must be pressed off to replace the seal. I have never seen a bearing survive getting pressed off. I would also not reuse the retaining ring.
A quick look at the Crown Automotive web site seems to indicate that all Wrangler TJ D44’s are of the flanged style.
really easy . pull the brakes if disc only drum if drums pull the diff cover ,take center shaft bolt out pull center shaft .push the axles in to remove c clips remove axle shafts.remove outer seal re install seal with proper sized socket to tap it in.re install in reverse order fill with gear oil. 1 1/2 tops.no tape on shafts.
there is c-clip and non c-clip when i got my lockers that was asked. ???(being sarcastic >>>) maybe i dont know what im talking about been told that befor lol
OK i just ordered two seal and bearing kits figured might as well do both of them. What’s the best way to get the retaining ring off the axles and new ones on? I plan to buy a 12 ton H press this week as I need it for other projects on the jeep. Any special tools that I might need?
