Finally picked up a new tcase. It’s ready to swap in (pulling apart tomorrow to double check what internals I know). If anyone (especially our fearless leader with a zj) has some time in the next month or so and would be willing to lend a hand and teach me that’d be great.
I don’t even have the time to get my own Jeep back together but can offer a few comments:
1.) If that is a 242 then get rid of it and find a 231. After running 249’s for almost 15 years it took me exactly 1 snow storm after swapping in a 242 to realize it was a mistake. Not only that, the shifting is finicky. If you are building a trail rig then the 231 is the only way to go.
2.) Transmission output seals are prone to leaking after swapping t-case. Now is the time to replace the seal.
3.) The top bolt is difficult to access. You need to remove the transmission cross member and lower the whole assembly. But not too far or you will break the O2 sensor wire.
4.) You will lose just enough transmission fluid during the swap to affect shifting. Be sure to top it off before driving away.
231 has no full time 4 for street use. since it’s currently my dd and trail rig wouldn’t 231 be less useful for my purposes. obviously it has it’s draw backs but is better then a 249 with a burned up vc
Why do you need full time 4wd for street use? There is not a Wrangler in existence with full time 4wd and they do just fine. Trust me, you will quickly discover that the full time mode of the 242 is useless compared to the 249 and end up in part time 4wd anyway.
