Hey my name is Erik and live in West Warwick off of Palaski street.
I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 lifted 3" with 33’s.
I have a ticking noise coming from were the transmission meets the flywheel area.
What i have done so far is make sure the flywheel bolts are tight, made sure the inspection cover is not hitting anything, exaust isn’t rubbing on anything, took the valve cover off the engine made sure the rocker arms are torqued and ran it with it off and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.
It sounds like it could be the transmission ticking if that is possible?
I am running Dextron 6 in the transmission and the transfercase and 15w40 in the engine.
If anyone is in the area this weekend that could swing by that would be great.
When does it tick…at idle, in first gear only all the time etc…
when it does tick does it get worse with RPM’s or not?
There are two weaknesses with the AW4…the front pump and cracks in the flexplate. Both require the trans to be dropped to fix. When my front pump started to go it would tick while in first gear and then went away once it shifted into second.
I recently had the transmission completely rebuilt, new pump, new torque converter and all new seals and clutches…
When you first start it it ticks, then when you give it gas the ticking speeds up. When driving it goes away(i think because the engine is loud) then comes back as the idle goes down.
ok, so whats the next step rather replacing all that stuff? But i did run it without the valve cover on and everything looked fine, and used a stethascope on the rockerarms and nothing sounded bad…
Just for s&g’s place the stethoscope against the timing cover. You could have timing belt slap. Also place it just above the oil pan mounting lip on the bottom of the engine. That would put you closer to the cam shaft.
mine ticked when idling but went away when i hit the brakes and gas. it ended up being a cracked flexplate.
does it have a coil pack (could be late 99?) the reason i ask is some xjs manufactured very late 99 came with the coil pack engines. The coil pack makes a SURPRISINGLY loud ticking noise on warmup especially in cold weather.
